Firewood vs. Firewood

Battle of the versions 1.0 vs. 2.0

Remember the scene in Terminator 2 where T-800 (Schwarzenegger) faces his nemesis in the new improved T-1000 Terminator? Well Firewood 1.0 meet Firewood 2.0 and let’s see who will be the last “mp3” standing?

Ok so I love, love, love both versions of the Burna Boy track Firewood, same song, near similar verses but totally different feels to the tracks.

FW 1.0 was a more reggae/dance-hall flavoured track and if I recall was the second Burna track to float across the airwaves although in my opinion wasn’t as heavily a promoted track as the other tracks from the Idonije mixtape. It has a far more fun feel to it than FW 2.0 (IMHO) as well as a hungrier flavour to it, guess the hungry taste was the zeal of a new artist trying to breakout, and for me is my favorite of the two, Vintage Burna Boy you might say and is more reminiscent of the Freedom era.

FW 2.0 is the sound of a more confident artist, yes, but somewhat lacking the contagious raw, spontaneous fleshiness of the original. The quality is better and the artist breaks away from the dance-hall stereotype and experiments with new beats and electronica (LeriQ doing a stand-up job as always), specifically targeting the Lagos market, but leaving PH fans like myself with a few pangs of nostalgia.

So what’s your N0.10 (ten kobo only) on my observation? Which is your favorite? 1.0 or 2.0?

SIDE NOTE:

Have you checked out the rest of his stuff? No? Burna Boy is a dope ass rapper too, you might want to treat your ears to the track “Red Bandanna” from the Burn Notice Mixtape, you shall be pleasantly surprised.
